Application
DCM is primarily used as a versatile solvent in various industrial applications due to its strong solvent power and high volatility. It serves as a paint remover, aerosol propellant, and a processing solvent in the production of pharmaceuticals, such as steroids, antibiotics, and vitamins. Additionally, DCM is crucial in metal cleaning, electronics manufacturing as a degreasing agent, and in the production of polycarbonate resins and triacetate fibers. Its role extends to film processing, ink formulations, and as an extraction solvent for spice oleoresins, caffeine, and hops. With its ability to dissolve cellulose esters, fats, oils, resins, and rubber, and its higher solubility in water compared to other chlorinated solvents, DCM is also utilized as a urethane foam-blowing agent and, historically, was used as an insecticide for commodity fumigation. Despite its practical advantages, exposure to DCM requires caution due to its potential health effects, emphasizing the need for safe handling practices in environments where it is used.
